WHY AN EDUCATION RESOURCE CENTER?
It has been few years, perhaps five, since we read about John Kpannah, a 4th grade student who was short by police in Gbarnga, Bong County on December 8, 2001:Amnesty International. As you will recall from the story surrounding John's death, he was not a child solder. He was simply a student who had been put of our school for not meeting the school's financial requirement. He needed money to purchase a ream of paper [requirement for test] and pay his school fee. Student John Kpannah went to his village to seek for help from his folks. They had no money to help their son who had burning desire for education. So, he was given a chicken to sell, and raise the money he needed. Unfortunately for John, he and his colleagues traveling with him were approached by then police commander Railey. According to narrative from John's colleagues, who escaped from the police chief, John was asked from where he got the chicken? He explained to Mr. Railey, his circumstance. But that did not save John's life.
Imagine for a moment if the Education Resource Center was in Gbarnga, where perhaps John would have come for help with a ream of paper, or where John's teacher would have come to prepare his test for John's class, little John wouldn't gone to his village for a chicken.
The United Bong County Association in the Americas took action, appropriate at the time: Bong County Associations Condemn Police Killing of Youth in Gbarnga. But is condemnation enough to prevent
the reoccurrence of such tragedy under the same circumstance? My answer is 'NO.' We need to do more to help students and teachers alike, not only in Bong County, but in all of Liberia. An education resource center like the UBCAA model: PROJECT SUMMARY would help to improve the efficiency of learning in Liberia. Consider this; one school year for any of us without a library.
For the United Bong County Association in the Americas, the Education Resource Center Project is a good start in a long battle to improve education in Liberia. Would you become a partner? Just click on the "Make a Donation" button below.
The total cost for Phase I, which involves the construction of the Center is $150,000.00.
